Splined!

Description

Splined! was our group's final film at the end of our first semester of Digital Animation at Capilano University. In a team of seven, we had three weeks to produce a one minute-ish short film from scratch, starting with story ideas and concept art all the way through the production pipeline until we had a final product.

Splined! takes place in the Maya animation graph editor where we thought it would be really cool to create environments based on the idea that background elements would be more blocky and simple in stepped mode, but round and smooth when in splined mode. If you don't know what that means but have some grasp of animation terms - stepped mode is basically all your keyframes so everything feels choppy and chunky whereas splined mode is where everything gets "tweened" and the animation gets smoothed out to become more fluid. And the graph editor is where you modify your ease-ins and ease-outs using red, green, and blue curves.

But why a corgi? Because corgis are cute and I think we would have gone insane looking at a really ugly character for the duration of this film's production.

My team is well aware that there are inconsistencies and areas where it could be better but please bear in mind that we only had three weeks to create this from start to finish. :)

Please enjoy and thanks for watching!

You're right - the corgi is very cute!

How long have you guys been using Maya before making this film?
